Turkey is changing its name to Türkiye! The country has been called the Republic of Turkey since the 1920s, but the government has decided that it will now be called Türkiye.

This decision was made by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the AK Party. They explain that the new name is more in line with Turkey's heritage and will help to create a national identity. Some other reasons for the rebranding may also be to separate any association with the word “turkey”, referring to the bird.

To generate awareness of the name change, an online campaign called “Hello Türkiye” was started to advertise the rebranding. Also, the phrase “Made in Türkiye” will be added to all exported Turkish products.

So, how do you pronounce Türkiye? The correct pronunciation of Türkiye is "turk-EE-yeh," with the emphasis on the second syllable. The pronunciation is almost the same as the English version of “Turkey”, just add an extra “e” at the end. The name is actually the Turkish name of the country, and it is written in the Turkish alphabet, which includes letters with diacritics such as the long u, "ü".

Regardless of the name, Türkiye remains a rich and vibrant country with a long and fascinating history and a travel destination worth exploring. For example, take a look at our list of the top 5 summer destinations to travel in Turkey!
